The StopSlut Global Coalition fights for the rights of all girls to healthfully own their sexuality free of shame and aggression.

In the Fall of 2013, 108 girls from Brooklyn, The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and New Jersey came together as the founding members of the StopSlut Global Coalition. Over the past 6 months, this community of inspiring young women have worked to stem the tide of sexual shaming, harassment, and violence by calling for healthier attitudes toward female sexuality.  In this time they've reached 1000s of New York teens through thoughtful, energized, creative projects – igniting change from the ground up!

One of the goals of this movement is to establish a national coalition of students to spark conversation and launch StopSlut actions in their communities.

As we did with our flagship coalition in NY, StopSlut will offer students in communities throughout the country safe spaces to come together and share experiences.  As a community, the members of this coalition will identify the WHAT, HOW, and NOW... of slut culture, and then, with the support of mentors like us and like yourselves, the students will develop plans of action.  The plans of action will come in all shapes, sizes, and mediums – and will be designed to best serve the needs of specific communities.

*Please note the members of the coalition are encouraged contemplate the intersectionality of sexual degradation and violence, and owning own's sexuality – how do class, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. shift the experience?

The members of the coalition will bring these plans of action, back to their schools as a way of confronting and addressing the epidemic of slut-shaming, sexual violence, and sexual aggression, and in hopes of creating healthier attitudes toward female sexuality. They will be guided and supported by a team of mentors from organizations and institutions.  For example our NYC StopSlut Girl Coalition members were mentored by inspiring women from Cornell University, Lean In, Equality Now, The Feminist Press, New York Magazine, The BBC, Nickelodeon, and MORE!

THE GOAL:  A Butterfly Effect – sparking small but strategic changes in communities that will lead to a bigger, more dramatic shift.  We starting from the ground up and out.

The first StopSlut Global Coalition meeting was held on SEPTEMBER 28, 2014.  The girls spent their Saturday debating and discussing the topics, listening to and sharing stories, speaking with mentors, and participating in a reflective writing workshops focused on their experiences with all things “Slut."

This was followed by the StopSlut: A Conference on Sexuality, Bullying, and Rape, and once-a-month meetings through May 2014.

12 personal stories/testimonials from this workshop were selected for presentation at the conference and will be featured in SLUT: A Play and Guidebook for Combatting Sexism and Sexual Violence.

Participating in the coalition provides students with support, language, strategies, and a sense of sisterhood – all TOOLS that will empower them cracking this issue open.
